A Talk by Alfred Montgomery - The American Bomber that crashed during WW2 on Cavehill

Date: Thursday 4 July, 7pm to 7.45pm (Followed by book release and Question and Answers)

We have invited Alfred Montgomery along to Belfast Castle to give a talk about the WW2 B17 Flying Fortress that crashed on Cave Hill on 1 June 1944.

Belfast Castle celebrates ninety years of the Castle belonging to the City of Belfast and Alfred and William’s topic talk is a poignant one as in 2024, it is 80 years since that fateful morning when ten crew on board the  B17 Flying Fortress died.

The WW2 plane crash became an obsession of Alfred’s over the last forty years of his life and in December 1993, he was the finder of an inscribed wedding ring at the crash site owned by one of the crew on board. Following this, Alfred spent 2 and a half years researching and eventually returning the ring to the airman's widow in Kentucky, USA.

His talk will also cover the famous ‘ring story’ which was turned into a Hollywood movie in 2006 and how the story has evolved with his good friend and co-writer of their book William Lindsay to reveal some of the mystery around this crash which is covered in their second edition of "42-97862" which will be released at the castle on the same evening.

William and Alfred are jointly presenting this evening together with their second edition book release, and we would love you to come along.
