Getting married abroad
Before you book your ceremony in another country, check what you need first.
- You will have to provide certain documents to get married abroad and these can vary depending on where you travel to. Contact the registration service in that country to find out what you need to do.
- You may need to show proof that you are free to marry. For Northern Irish residents getting married abroad, the registration service might ask you for a Certificate of Legal Capacity to Marry (sometimes called a Certificate of Non-Impediment). You must submit your application for this in the district of your home address.
If you live in the Belfast district, you can make an appointment to submit your two notice forms, documents and fees at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/marriages. One document must show proof of home address.
Some couples find it is easier to have their legal ceremony in City Hall and then have a symbolic ceremony abroad. If you would like to do this, speak to one of our Registrars.
Remember to allow plenty of time, no matter where you decide to get married, in case you need to order copies of documents such as your full birth certificate. You can do this at www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/ordering-life-event-certificates (link opens in new window).
