Allez Alley - Let’s Go! with 9ft in Common

  • Date: Tuesday 1 October - Thursday 31 October
    City-wide

Get ready for a city-wide adventure that combines art, heritage, exploration!

9ft in Common are hiding 202 unique, handmade ceramic ‘hagstones’ across Belfast’s alleyways, representing the 202-kilometre alleyway network and the people and stories that make it special. These mini artworks were first shown together as Multitudes (Ceramic Treasures Invite New Perspective on Belfast’s Forgotten Alleyways - Link opens in new window), an editioned artwork, and are now being distributed throughout the city as tiny offerings waiting to be found.

But this treasure hunt is just the beginning. Our team is attempting to walk every alleyway in Belfast—something that’s never been done before! Equipped with expedition bags, maps, and a keen sense of curiosity, we’re conducting a detailed field analysis of each alley, from mapping and documenting conditions to tracking social interactions. This is our way of understanding these hidden spaces and unlocking their potential for everyone. If you spot us, say hello!

What’s a hagstone?

Hagstones are natural stones with a hole, believed to bring good luck and reveal hidden realms. Our ceramic versions invite you to see Belfast’s alleys in a new light: what if these spaces became green pathways, vibrant community hubs, or safe walking routes?

How can I join in?

Get out, explore, and see if you can find one of these hidden gems! If you do, it’s yours to keep. Take it as a reminder of the possibilities these alleys hold.

Follow @9ftincommon (Link opens in new window) on Instagram for regular updates on their whereabouts. Let’s show that when these spaces are occupied, they become safer and more vibrant for everyone. Let us know if you find one!

Why should I get involved?

Belfast’s alleys are often overlooked, but we believe they have incredible potential. Walking through and mapping them allows us to demonstrate that these spaces are more than just places to keep the bins—they’re vital connections within our city. We’re on a mission to turn neglected alleys into safe, vibrant places for everyone, but we need your help!
