Fall under the spell of A Midsummer Night's Dream outdoor magic at The Lyric

FALL UNDER THE SPELL OF A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM OUTDOOR MAGIC AT THE LYRIC

This summer fall under the spell of Shakespeare’s most joyful and popular comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream presented by Lyric Theatre Belfast, in collaboration with Belfast City Council’s Belfast 2024 from 4 – 7th July. With a dreamy, mischievous cast and a magical outdoor setting, William Shakespeare’s all time classic grants love at first sight, where anything could happen, and does!

This production will be the first staging the Lyric has undertaken in its outdoor space, where they will create a brand-new “Wooden O Stage”, for an immersive experience into Shakespeare's world-bending comedy. It will also be delivered with a range of inclusive, accessible community-led artistic collaborations including ArtsEkta, Beyond Skin and Rogue Encounters, with additional support from Another World and the Chinese Welfare Association.

On Midsummer’s Night, the real and fairy worlds collide. Filled with magic, humour, music, and spectacle, the merriment unfolds in an enchanted forest where fairies play tricks on unsuspecting lovers and bumbling actors are transformed beyond their wildest dreams. With a magic potion that grants love at first sight, anything can, and does! As mortals cross paths with a warring fairy King and Queen, chaos reigns in the natural world and the lines between reality and illusion start to blur and no-one but mischievous Puck knows what is true and what is magic.

Enter the magical world and join the dreamy cast featuring Hermia (Jessica Reynolds), Lysander (Cillian Lenaghan), Demetrius (Ash Rizi), Oberon & Theseus (Sean Kearns), Titania & Hippolyta (Leah Minto), Robin Goodfellow/ Puck (Patrick McBrearty), Nick Bottom (Steven Calvert), Sung (Caroline Curran), Snout (Neil Keery), Flute (Calium Carragher), Peter Quince (Jo Donnelly) and Fairies (Rogue Encounters).

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray, said:
“Belfast City Council is proud to support this event as part of our Belfast 2024 programme – another gem in what has already been an amazing year for arts and culture in our city, with lots more still to come. Like all our commissioned events, the Lyric’s new production of A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream has been shaped by strong community input, using the creative arts to bring people together, whether through acting, costumes, music and much more.”

Jimmy Fay,  Director of Midsummer Night’s Dream, said:
“This is truly a special moment for the Lyric Theatre, which has been made possible through the fantastic collaboration with Belfast City Council’s Belfast2024. This collaboration has helped us make a lot of dreams a reality.  Our first outdoor production, the community partnerships providing opportunities to be inclusive and diverse and of course the dreamy cast.  It’s going to be magical but with a sprinkling of mischief – of course!”

Midsummer at the Lyric has been funded and commissioned by Belfast City Council as part of the Belfast2024 Programme.
