Human rights activist Stuart Milk has arrived in Belfast for four days of events during LGBT+ History Month.
The nephew and co-founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation is a special guest of Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray, who has organised the programme to mark his year in office.
Since the 1980s, Milk has dedicated his time to continuing his uncle’s legacy, working with LGBTQIA+ organisations worldwide and highlighting the continued need for diversity, equality and inclusion.
Welcoming him at 2 Royal Avenue – the first floor of which is the preferred venue for the city’s first dedicated LGBTQIA+ Hub – Councillor Murray said:
“Harvey Milk is an iconic figure in civil rights history, not just for the LGBTQIA+ community, but for everyone – and Stuart has been central to ensuring Harvey’s message lives on.
“As Belfast’s first openly gay Lord Mayor, I’ve been hugely proud to represent my city and my community, and to play my own part in highlighting the importance of tolerance, kindness and acceptance - now and into the future.
“I’m looking forward to showing Stuart how far we have come on our own journey to building a shared, more diverse city, and to showcasing some of the amazing work of our LGBTQIA+ community here in Belfast.”
During his visit, Milk will meet with students from Belfast Met, as well as pupils from Lagan College, Hazelwood College and St Louise’s College, to share details of his uncle’s life and his foundation’s ongoing work to tackle hate and discrimination worldwide.
On Saturday, he will take part in a walking tour of the city with representatives from HERe NI, followed by a free talk for young people in City Hall, together with Politics in Action.
After delivering the keynote address at a dinner at City Hall on Saturday evening, marking the Lord Mayor’s year in office, Milk will visit the Green House on Victoria Street on Sunday morning to deliver a special address at their Sunday Service event.
His visit will end with a screening of the Oscar-winning documentary The Times of Harvey Milk at QFT Belfast, followed by a Q&A with the audience.
