Lord Mayor of Belfast launches Positive Ageing Month

Date: 07 Oct 2024

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray launches Positive Ageing Month with two Age Friendly Belfast volunteers

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray has launched the 8th annual Positive Ageing Month at Belfast City Hall. From boccia to baking and dancing to digital development, the month-long programme encourages older people to get active, enhance skills or simply socialise with others.

Held every October, Positive Ageing Month celebrates the important contribution older people make to society while showcasing the range of events and activities they can enjoy throughout the year. Speaking at the annual Age Friendly Belfast Convention and Ceili, the Lord Mayor heard from Belfast’s older residents about the value of such initiatives.

“Belfast is recognised as a World Health Organization ‘Age Friendly City’ and it’s been wonderful to hear today how initiatives like Positive Ageing Month deliver this ambition. The bumper programme of events and activities showcase why cities are a great place to grow old. It provides a platform for older residents to discover what is happening on their doorstep and lead more connected lives. I would encourage all older citizens to get involved in what promises to be a fun-filled month of activity.”

Belfast City Council work alongside a range of other partners to deliver the Positive Ageing Month programme in venues across Belfast from community centres to iconic locations like Belfast Castle. The 2024 programme is designed to be accessible to everyone. Some highlights include archery tournaments, pumpkin carving workshops, movie screenings, tea dances, the popular Spooky Slipped Disco as well as walking tours of Cathedral Quarter and Friar's Bush.

Copies of the Positive Ageing Month ‘What’s on Guide’ will also be available in ‘The Grapevine’ – a Connection Hub for older people which is open every Tuesday in 2 Royal Avenue from 11am to 1pm. Manned by Age Friendly Belfast volunteers, the space provides older people with the opportunity to drop-in, meet a friendly face and find out more about events and services available to them.
