Belfast City Council is searching for the city’s next sporting superstar.

Belfast City Council is searching for the city’s next sporting superstar.

The “Find a Sports Star” programme will take place in four leisure centres across the city in February 2020, aiming to unearth such sporting talent as World Champion Boxer Carl Frampton or Olympic gold medallist Dame Mary Peters.

Supported by GLL, young people aged 6 - 16 are being encouraged to sign up and get involved in the free sessions which will test participants’ physical abilities in a range of sports such as boxing, tennis, volleyball, bowls, swimming and Gaelic games.

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Daniel Baker, is encouraging as many young people as possible to sign up to take part. He said: “This is a fantastic initiative for our young people to get involved in. Not only is it a great opportunity for individuals to try their hand at different sports, but it will hopefully encourage more of our young people to get out and get active. Participation in sport is a great way of fulfilling an active and healthy lifestyle and it’s also a brilliant way for young people to come together and meet new people and build friendships.

He added: “And who knows, the “Find a Sports Star” sessions could act as a springboard for some of our young people to go on to bigger and better things in the world of sport.”

Belfast City Council has invested £10,000 in this programme which will enhance the opportunities for young people to get involved with sport at a high level and potentially become stars of the future.

Sports governing bodies will conduct sessions, providing top class coaching and conducting tests aimed at signposting youths into their mainstream sports squads and best practice clubs.

Participants can attend as many of the free session as they wish. They will take place at:

  • Whiterock Leisure Centre – Monday 17 February, 10am – 2pm
  • Olympia Leisure Centre – Tuesday 18 February, 10am – 2pm
  • Ballysillan Leisure Centre – Wednesday 19 February, 10am – 2pm
  • Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre – Thursday 20 February, 10am – 2pm

Registration for the assessment sessions is now open and can be completed online.
