Belfast man convicted of abandoning and causing unnecessary suffering to a dog

Mr Míchael Magee, of Cu Chulainn House, Victoria Parade, Belfast has been convicted of failing to ensure the welfare of, and abandoning, a dog at his address in Belfast on 18 May 2023.

At Belfast Magistrates' Court on 11 June 2024, Mr Magee was sentenced, following his conviction for failing to ensure the welfare of and abandoning the Pocket Bully type dog.

Belfast City Council took the prosecution after complaints that a dog had been left at the property unattended for a number of days.

Animal Welfare officers entered the property under warrant and seized the dog which had been unattended for a period of at least 72 hours. Council officers removed the dog from the premises for examination by a veterinarian.

Mr Magee was handed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, for failing to ensure the welfare of a dog under section 9 of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

He was further sentenced to a four-month prison sentence, suspended for one year, under section 14 of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011, for abandoning the dog.

Mr Magee was also 
ordered to pay legal and other costs totalling £214 and was disqualified from owning dogs for a period of ten years.
