Date: Monday 8 to Sunday 14 July
Venue: Belfast Zoo
Category: Belfast Zoo
Belfast Zoo is marking the transfer of Asian elephants Dhunja and Yhetto with a week of farewell events from 8 to 14 July.
The pair are moving to their new home in Burgers’ Zoo in Arnhem, Netherlands where they will join with two other compatible elephants to create a new herd of four – the ideal social structure for older female elephants in their later years.
Come along to the zoo to:
- see the animals at special feeding times throughout the day
- take time out at the Zoo café and enjoy daily screenings of The Zoo movie, which tells the wonderful true story of how a lonely widow and three schoolchildren banded together to save an elephant in Belfast Zoo during World War II
- join elephant talks and hear about all the history of elephants during 90 years of Belfast Zoo
- fill the elephants’ packing trunks with postcards full of your memories and well wishes
- grab a photo with the Zoo mascots
- create your own keepsake with elephant-themed activities
- visit the elephants and wish them farewell
- pose for a photo souvenir at the Photography Basecamp
- pick up a commemorative memento booklet from the Zoo gift shop
