Marriages and civil partnerships - guidance and advice

Submitting your marriage notice forms

You can make your appointment online at www.belfastcity.gov.uk/registrars to submit your forms and give notice.

Be advised the law requires 28 clear days’ notice before you can get married or form a civil partnership. It is best to give notice in person.

If you live outside the island of Ireland, you can give notice by post. Make sure you use the correct postage so that there are no delays with your documents. We can accept photocopies of your original passports and birth documents; however, we will need to see all the originals before the ceremony takes place.

Documents you must produce

Consent to marry

If you are aged 16 or 17 years, you will need to provide proof of consent. Forms are available from the Registrar.

Legal requirements

You must produce a full version of your birth certificate. You can get these from nidirect.gov.uk or by calling 030 0200 7890.

Marital Status

If you are widowed, you must produce your spouse’s death certificate.

If you are divorced, you must produce a copy of your Decree Absolute. If a woman has been divorced and her Decree Absolute uses her married name, she will need to provide her previous marriage certificate.

Nationality

Everyone must produce a valid passport or national identity card.

If you don’t hold a passport or national identity card, you should contact the Registrar to get advice on acceptable alternative documents.

If you’re not a UK or Irish citizen, you may be subject to immigration control. If you have applied for pre-settled status or have settled status to live in the UK, you will need to provide a share code. If you don’t have a share code, you may have to complete an Immigration Status Statement form (ISS form). For more information, visit www.nidirect.gov.uk (link opens in new window).

Translation of documents to English

Be aware that some documents may need translated to English. On most occasions, it is not necessary to translate a birth certificate. Please contact the Registration Office for advice on translations.

Foreign divorces will need to be translated into English. All translations must be certified.
