Currently kerbside glass recycling is available to many households in Belfast. If you have a purple recycling box, you can recycle glass bottles and jars every fortnight at the kerbside. If your household has a weekly recycling box collection, you can also recycle glass bottles and jars at the kerbside.
There are approximately 70,000 households that don’t have a kerbside recycling collection for glass bottles and jars. We have a three-year project to provide glass recycling collections to households in areas that don’t have this service.
The project will run in three phases from 2025 to 2027:
For phase one, we have selected addresses in east and west Belfast where residents will have kerbside glass collections. We have not yet identified which areas to cover during phases two and three.
In early 2025, we plan to extend kerbside glass recycling to 23,000 households in east and west Belfast.
We will write to households in east and west Belfast where the fortnightly glass collection service will start. We will contact the relevant households between January and March 2025.
Before kerbside glass recycling starts in east and west Belfast, we’ll provide each household with a free 44-litre plastic box. The box has a black lid.
We will survey apartments at an address and assess suitability for a glass collection box. The box will be used by all apartments at a certain address and must be presented on the scheduled collection day every two weeks.
To recycle glass bottles and jars, you must use the 44-litre recycling box we provide. Glass must be secured in the box with the lid on. Don't put broken glass in the recycling box. You should place this in the general waste bin.
On your scheduled collection day, leave the recycling box at the same place where you present your other bins. Put out the box before 7am. We won't collect other containers, boxes or bags of glass. If you need to recycle glass bottles or jars before the next scheduled collection, bring the glass to a recycling centre or bottle bank.
If your plastic recycling box or lid is damaged or broken, you can order a replacement online. You can also contact our Customer Hub, [email protected].
The Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is providing 50 per cent of the start-up costs for the three-year project. We provided 50 per cent of the costs for phase one in 2024-2025. We haven't yet agreed funding for phases two and three.
