Rose Week

The international Rose Garden at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park is one of the world’s leading rose gardens, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Rose Week, with its full programme of activities, is a celebration of this spectacular rose garden and is now one of Belfast’s most popular annual events.

There is music and entertainment for all the family with daily events including face painting, bouncy castles, mega slide, balloon modelling, Punch & Judy shows and much more.

There will be a shuttle bus from Belfast City Hall Grounds (East) directly to Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park.

Where the fun is at:

Punch and Judy, face painting, balloon modelling, children’s tattooing, magic shows and street entertainment all take place in the playground area.

Pay zone: Kiddies Safari Train, Swing Chair Ride and Last One Standing will be at the back of the Information Marquee - tickets for each of these activities cost £1 per person you can buy them at the Pay Zone kiosk.

All other activities (unless otherwise stated) take place close to Wilmont House.

Daily events

  • Harp music in the Rose Garden, 2pm - 5pm
  • Bouncy castle near Wilmont House, 1 - 5pm.
  • Face painting, balloon modelling and children’s tattooing in the playground area.  1pm – 5pm.
  • Kiddies Safari Train, Swing Chair Ride and Last One Standing, 1pm -5pm.
    - You must buy a £1 token from the Pay Zone Kiosk.
  • Belfast City Council Recycling Information Stand, 1pm – 5pm.
  • Belfast Parks photographic exhibition in marquee
    - Monday to Friday 10am - 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 11am - 5.30pm.
    Browse some of the images that won our previous Belfast Parks photographic competitions. Why not take a photograph during the event and enter it into this year’s competition for a chance to win a share of £1,000 sponsored by John McQuillan (Contracts) Ltd and supported by Jessops.
  • Punch and Judy in the playground area, Monday to Thursday at 2.30pm and 3.45pm, Friday to Sunday 2.30pm.  

Competitions galore

Try our Nature Trail competition and quiz or enter one of our five new children’s arts and craft classes with a chance of winning a family pass to Belfast Zoo.

Competition entry forms are available from the Information Marquee beside Wilmont House, at the following times:  Monday to Friday from 10am - 8pm, Saturday and Sunday from 11am - 5.30pm. 

To add to this year’s fun we are asking visitors to Rose Week to name someone to whom they would gladly give a rose. Winners will receive one of the award winning rose plants from the Lord Mayor.

Nominations for the competition may be made on our social media – Facebook, Twitter or Instagram - using #roseweek18 accompanied by photos from the park or by using an entry form available from the information marquee.

City of Belfast international Rose Trials

On Friday 20 July, a panel of International Judges will complete the final judging of the City of Belfast International Rose Trials.  The awards for the winning rose breeders are sponsored by Belfast City Council, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs, Tourism NI, Clive Richardson Ltd, Eventsec and The Rose Society.

Ukulele Jam, 12noon – 2pm.
We are kicking off Rose Week with some great foot tapping music with Ukulele Jam.

Floral art demonstration, 1pm – 3pm.
This popular demonstration is a celebration of floral beauty and marvellous creations by Roberta Orr.

Fitness Freddy, 1pm - 5pm.
Join Fitness Freddy in an outdoor dance class. Suitable for all ages

Hanging basket and container planting workshop, 1pm-5pm.
Bring along your own basket or small container and we will give you free plants and compost. Numbers limited to 100, on a first come, first served basis.

Climbing wall, 1pm-5pm.
Hang tough and give the climbing wall a go to get a bird’s eye view of the park from a dizzy height!!

Prime Intensity Hip Hop Dance School, 1.30pm – 4.30pm.
Check out this funky hip hop dance routine, these fab moves will get you feeling good for the summer.

James Quinn, 3pm - 5pm.
Genres from acoustic rock and pop to classic and contemporary songs.

3rd Carrick Silver Band, 7.30pm - 8.30pm.

Tuesday 17 July 

Tea Dance Tuesday, 2pm - 4pm.
Come along and get into the groove with our age friendly tea dance. Numbers are limited to 60 people.

This Irish traditional music set will get everyone clapping along!

Ballylone Concert Flute Band, 7.30 - 8.30pm.

Wednesday 18 July

Photography workshop, 11am - 5pm.
Learn about what makes a good image with Jessops. Cameras will be provided. Multiple 45 minute sessions will be held throughout the day between 11am – 5pm. Limited places available, please email 188belfast@jessops.com to book a place.

GIANT Dart Football, 1pm – 5 pm.
Fancy yourself as the next footballing superstar? This newest craze “Foot Darts” are fantastic fun for children and adults of all ages.

Food demonstrations, 1pm - 5pm.
Join local chefs Doc & Dazzler, get great menu ideas and good advice and tips on how to use up your left over food and lots more.

Salsa Dancing, 1.30pm – 4.30pm.
Join Chris Scullion and his team when the stage comes alive with high energy dance routines and exhilarating music.

Yoga in the Park with Breath Yoga, 2pm – 5pm.
This FREE all level yoga class is accessible to everyone. Bring along a yoga mat and a bottle of water. Wear suitable clothing.

Clara Wilson, 2.30pm - 4.30pm.
One of Ireland's leading Sopranos will be covering everything from religious to classical to easy listening chart classics.

George Dummigan Accordion Orchestra, 7.30pm – 8.30pm.

Irish dancing, 11.30am – 3pm.
Performances by the McGowan/ Moore Academy. Why not give it a go yourself?

Teddy Bears Picnic, 1pm – 4pm.
“If you go down to the Park today, you’re in for a big surprise!!!”
Bring your Ted and join us for our Teddy Bears Picnic in the garden. Plenty of stories and lots of fun too!
Suitable for younger children.

Jump, Jiggle and Jive, 1pm – 5pm.
Dancing and keeping active can be fun for our younger visitors, but parents can join in if they can keep up!

Refreshments: Tea, coffee and snacks are available each day from 10am - 5pm in the Catering Marquee in front of Wilmont House. Hot and cold meals are available each day from the Stables Coffee Shop at the lower car park, 9.30am - 5.30pm.

Shopmobility Belfast will be at Rose Week everyday in the Information Marquee beside Wilmont House, 1pm - 5pm.
You can hire scooters for free but you must show photographic ID and proof of address.. We advise you to pre-book scooters by calling 028 9080 8090 as there is a limited number of scooters available

Free shuttle bus from Belfast City Centre
During Rose Week we will have a free shuttle bus service direct to Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park every day at approximately 20 minute intervals from City Hall grounds (East). Buses will start at 12noon and the last bus leaves Belfast City Centre at 5pm. Drop off and collection point at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park is in the Upper Car Park.
The first bus back from Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon is at12.20pm with the last bus leaving the park at 5.20pm.

Car parking is available in the main car parks and Rose Week car parks at Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park. Where possible, cars can drop off elderly or disabled visitors close to Wilmont House but cars must then be parked in one of the main car parks.
